Officially assess your French language skills for immigration, education, or the job market through recognized tests.

Cégep Saint-Jean is accredited by the Chambre de commerce et d’Industrie de Paris Île-de-France to administer French proficiency tests.

Reserve your spot

The tests are scheduled between 1 PM and 6 PM for each of the proposed dates.

The exact time of your appointment will be sent to you one week before the selected date. We therefore invite you to ensure you are available throughout this time slot until you receive your official appointment notice.

The choice of test type is your responsibility. If in doubt, we invite you to consult the detailed information to help you make the appropriate choice.

  • If you register for multiple tests, they must all be taken on the same day at the same campus.
  • When registering, a separate form must be completed for each type of test.

French Proficiency Test (TEF) for Admission to CEGEP or University

For those who are considering studying at a CEGEP or a university

The TEF is an internationally recognized exam that assesses your French language skills, both written and spoken.

The test is administered on a computer, except for the speaking section, which is conducted as an interview with an examiner.

For CEGEPs where the language of instruction is French, a language test is required for most international applicants, as well as for those who have studied in the CEGEP’s language of instruction or not.

Mandatory TEF Exam for Admission to French-Language CEGEPs (SRAM)

  • Listening Comprehension: 40 min - 40 questions
  • Reading Comprehension: 60 min - 40 questions
  • Vocabulary and Structure: 30 min - 40 questions

Mandatory TEF Exam for Admission to an English-Language CEGEP

  • Listening Comprehension: 40 min - 40 questions
  • Reading Comprehension: 60 min - 40 questions
  • Oral presentation: 30 min—two topics to discuss
  • Written exam: 60 min - two topics to address

French Proficiency Test for Quebec (TEFAQ)

For those who wish to apply for permanent residence

The TEFAQ is a version of the TEF that is recognized by the ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration (MIFI) for immigration applications to Quebec.

As part of an application to immigrate to Quebec, you must pass the following two tests:

  • Listening Comprehension: 40 min - 40 questions
  • Oral presentation: 30 min—two topics to discuss (15 min each)

The Reading Comprehension and Writing sections are optional.

French Proficiency Test for Canada (TEF-Canada)

For those who wish to immigrate to Canada and obtain Canadian citizenship

TEF-Canada is a version of the TEF that certifies your French language proficiency as part of an immigration application to Canada or if you wish to obtain Canadian citizenship. You must provide proof of language proficiency as required by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

It also serves as proof of proficiency in the French language for the purpose of obtaining Canadian citizenship.

As part of immigration and citizenship application procedures, the federal government of Canada recognizes the TEF-Canada as proof of French language proficiency.

As part of an application to immigrate to Canada, you must pass the following four tests:

  • Listening Comprehension: 40 min - 60 questions
  • Reading Comprehension: 60 min - 50 questions
  • Oral presentation: 30 min—two topics to discuss
  • Written exam: 60 min - two topics to address

As part of your application for Canadian citizenship, you must pass the following two tests:

  • Listening Comprehension: 40 min - 60 questions
  • Oral presentation: 30 min—two topics to discuss

All exams must be taken on the same day for your certificate to be recognized by Canadian authorities.

Admission Requirements

Documents Required for Online Registration

You will need to provide:

  • A copy or photo of a valid, official photo ID (e.g., passport, driver’s license)

How to Register

  1. From the table of tests* offered, select the ones you would like to take on the date that works for you.
  2. Fill out the registration form that appears and attach the required documents.
  3. Proceed to payment.
  4. You will then receive your registration confirmation by email.

*We cannot advise you on which exams to choose, as the requirements vary by candidate. It is your responsibility to select the exam(s) you need. For more information, please visit:

Important

The Day of the Test

  • Please arrive 30 minutes before the test begins.
  • You will be asked to show identification at every stage of the test.
  • Cell phones and smart watches are not permitted and will be removed before the test.

Practical Information

Before the event

  • By appointment only. Register at least 9 days before the scheduled test date.
  • A minimum of three candidates per session is required for the test to take place. The Cégep reserves the right to postpone the session due to a lack of participants.

After the test

  • Score reports are sent by email by Le Français des affaires within approximately 7 business days. It is not possible to expedite the grading process.
  • In the event of failure, a 30-day waiting period will apply before you can register for a retake exam.

Accommodations for People with Disabilities

The Cégep can make adjustments to the exam rooms to help ensure that your exams go smoothly:

  • Before proceeding with your registration, please contact the Cégep to submit your request for accommodation at least one month in advance.
  • You must submit a medical note confirming the nature of your disability and outlining any accommodations needed to ensure your exams proceed smoothly.
  • If you have trouble using digital tools, please contact the Cégep, and we can offer solutions that meet your needs.
  • Your request will be forwarded to the exam organizer, Le français des affaires, for review and to determine whether we can provide the accommodations you have requested.

Cancellation Policy

By registering, you agree to these terms:

Once you have registered, you cannot cancel your registration or request a refund.

In the event of an absence or cancellation due to a major reason (illness, death, work-related conflict), you must provide supporting documentation to the Cégep's Brossard campus. Requests will be reviewed, and if approved, you may be offered the opportunity to retake the exams at no cost within a maximum of 6 months.

Any absence without cause or withdrawal is non-refundable.
